Make no mistake about it, preventing skin damage is of the utmost importance as you age, but it should be taken a step further because pampering your skin really goes a long way. It is very important that as you age, you age beautifully - and not just the women - the men as well. We should all be concerned about our outward appearance and how we present ourselves to the world. In many ways it makes a difference in how we function in society.

When it comes to maintaining a healthy skin cleansing regimen there are three groups that come to mind. There are those who buy every new product that is marketed, there is the group that never buys anything and just sticks to basic soap and water and then the biggest group of all who purchases product after product and forgets to use them.

Cleanse your skin. Don't go to bed with makeup on your face. As you sleep the residue clogs your pores and doesn't allow dead skin cells to be shed. In addition, your skin is unable to regulate its temperature, breathe properly or release toxins. Facial cleanser doesn't have to be expensive to be good and effective, so it's alright to keep it simple. It isn't on your skin long so this is one area where you can skip the high price name brand for something a little cheaper.

Choose a gentle cleanser without fragrance and harsh detergents and soap. Do not use the same soap you use on your body. You want a cleanser that leaves your facial skin feeling clean, not tight and dry. It should be close to your skin's pH which is slightly acidic - around 4.5 to 5.5 - with some alpha and beta hydroxides to open your pores, dissolve oil and slough off some skin.

When deciding whether or not to use a toner, that is entirely up to you. Depending on who you ask, what type of skin you have and the type of toner you choose this is an area where not everyone agrees. Toners wipe up what a cleanser leaves behind, because even a good cleanser doesn't remove all the dirt and oil from your skin. Alcohol can irritate the skin so choose a non-alcohol based astringent if possible. Toners, like cleansers do not have to be expensive so read the labels and get the correct toner for your skin type.

Exfoliation is a delicate area and many people tend to get a little harsh with exfoliation. By no means should you scrub your skin with brushes until the skin is raw! Exfoliating the outer layer of your skin helps the nutrients in your skincare products - the serums and moisturizers - get down to the live skin cells. Quality is important when purchasing an exfoliation product. Make sure you buy a facial exfoliant with an 8-10 percent glycolic acid pad to slough off dead skin cells. Anything weaker will not achieve exfoliating results.

If you want your skin to remain supple you must keep it moisturized. We all have a natural moisturizing oil called sebum that we repeatedly shower away with harsh soaps and lose when we are exposed to the environment. It wipes off when we sweat and rubs off on our clothes. Using moisturizers helps to replenish the skin with the vital nutrients and hydration it requires to stay healthy.

Make an investment in your moisturizer and buy a quality product. Pay for the quality and not the label. Purchase an oil-free product for oily skin and a cream for normal to dry skin. For extra protection, look for a product that includes an SPF of 30 to protect you from the sun. On a final note, stay away from mineral oil as it clogs the pores and traps perspiration. In addition, mineral oil doesn't get absorbed into the skin because the molecules it contains are too big.

Apply your moisturizer twice a day after cleaning, toning and exfoliating to maintain a healthy, glowing and vibrant complexion.
